The town of Hoedspruit is located in the Limpopo Province of South Africa, nestled between the Kruger National Park and the Blyde River Canyon. It is surrounded by the largest privately-owned conservation area in the world. Co-ordinates 24.3461° S, 30.9733° E

Hoedspruit is an excellent destination to visit year round. The South African winter (the European summer) is dry and not too hot, the African summer (the European winter) is warm and has a period of short rains.

Hoedspruit is located in a low-risk malaria area. This means that you do have to take measures against malaria. Most accommodations offer mosquito nets and air conditioning in the room. Please wear long sleeves and pants at dusk and dawn and spray. A visit to Kruger Park is considered low-risk malaria area, so consult your doctor on all necessary precautions.

As long as you adhere to the basic rules (don’t drive after sunset, leave your personal belongings and valuables in your safe, don’t wear a lot of jewellery etc.), you will find that the negative image of South Africa when it comes to safety is not justified. Many of the lodges, and B&B establishments are located in the wildlife estates and private reserves where you enjoy 24/7 security. Hoedspruit is a rural area with low crime rates. It is no problem to drive at night to Hoedspruit’s restaurants.

Major international credit cards are accepted by most top hotels, restaurants, lodges, permanent safari camps and shops. Visa and MasterCard are most widely accepted. American Express and Diner’s Club are also accepted by a few businesses. However, American Express and Diner’s Club are not often taken in more remote areas and camps.

Cash is recommended in the camps/lodges whilst out on safari. It is generally a good idea to keep cash on you as South Africa does experience power outages

Yes, there are good internet providers in Hoedspruit. Wi-Fi connectivity varies in the camps/lodges depending on their location. Wi-Fi would normally be free and available in the public areas

Yes, unless otherwise signposted, you can drink the tap water, however, if you are sensitive to changes or have a delicate stomach it may be better to avoid it. Bottled water is available for purchase.

It is very important that you drink plenty of water, especially during the warmer months. It is recommended that you drink at least 2 to 3 liters of water per day to limit the effects of dehydration – this excludes tea, coffee, and alcoholic beverages.
